Why Electrical Surge Coverage?

FirstEnergy Home™ Electrical Surge Coverage is an affordable way to help make sure you’re covered from the unexpected costs of damage caused by electrical surges. Electrical Surge Coverage will provide reimbursement for the repair or replacement of covered electronics and appliances valued at $100 or more that fail due to a covered electrical surge

Internal Electrical Surges

More than half of household power surges are internal. These happen dozens of times a day, usually when devices with motors start up or shut off, diverting electricity to and from other appliances. Refrigerators and air conditioners are the biggest culprits, but smaller devices like hair dryers and power tools can also cause problems.**

External Electrical Surges

The other half of power surges occur from outside your home. External causes can include lightning strikes, fallen tree limbs, car accidents or wildlife.

FAQ's

An electrical surge is an unexpected and uncontrolled spike in voltage on an electrical circuit. In a typical home, these events can be caused by natural or man-made events including lightning strikes and power coming back on after an outage. These surges can damage unprotected devices instantly or over time.

An electrical surge can damage computers, smart devices, televisions and appliances that are common in today’s homes.

An electrical surge can be caused by natural or man-made events. A natural event can include lightning hitting a power, phone, or cable line, or even trees or animals encountering power lines. A man-made event can include a vehicle accident involving utility equipment. Other sources include the cycling on and off of large motors or compressors in refrigerators, air conditioners and other equipment, poor grounding and improper or faulty wiring.

Surges typically enter your home through electric, cable and telephone utility lines. However other lines – such as electronic dog fences, irrigation systems, yard light circuits, well pump feeds or low voltage lighting systems – can also be an entry point.

Your home is using electronics, systems, and appliances that contain extremely sensitive microchips, microprocessors and circuitry. Electrical surges accelerate wear and tear, increasing repair frequency, repair costs and product failure.

No. There is no equipment required.

Insurance coverage for losses resulting from power surges will depend on your policy and how the power surge was caused. If covered, your deductible can often be as much as the repair or replacement cost.

Plug-in surge protectors can lose effectiveness over time, and outfitting every electronic device in your home with a high-quality, up-to-date protector can be costly.

1. Call 1-855-330-6672 or email us within twenty (20) days of an Electrical Surge event to provide notice.
